Dorota Matys

“I have always been drawn to the beauty and mystery of the natural world. I’m still learning to understand and embrace it, in my recent works the concepts of change and impermanence are embraced. The shifting of leaves, water, color, embodied in these forms. I play with the passing moments which are reflected in these forms.

Through my process of layering paint I delight in the revealed tension between illusion in depth and flat patterning on the surface of my canvases. I often avoid balance or resolve, simply inviting the viewer to experience the newly created reality of the work”.

Dorota Matys grew up in Kety near Cracow, Poland. Her passion for art, nature, and beauty led her to apply to the School of Fine Art in Bielsko-Biala. She would then continue her education in the United States, studying at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore. While at MICA her studies focused on painting, fiber arts, and sculpture. Upon graduating with a BFA in Fine Arts, Dorota moved to Connecticut where she continues to live and work as a freelance artist. Dorota creates art at the Upper Room Art Studio in Norwalk CT, a collaborative art space she helped to create in 2015.
